Dick Wortel was born in 1946 in Alkmaar, The Netherlands. His father was archivist of the city of Alkmaar.
In 1971 he moved to Leiden where he began to work at the Institute for Dutch Lexicology, where he was involved in large historical dictionaries as *Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal (WNT) 'Dictionary of the Dutch language', Vroegmiddelnederlands Woordenboek (VMNW)* 'Early Middle Dutch Dictionary' and the *Oudnederlands Woordenboek (ONW),* 'Old Dutch Dictionary', see de website of the [Institute for Dutch Lexicology (INL)][2], Leiden, The Netherlands, for more info about these dictionaries.
Wortel published several books and articles on lexicography, dictionaries, etymology and Dialects. He has also written books and articles on social history of the Netherlands. As member of the editor board of the periodicals *Neerlandia* and *Nederlands van Nu* he wrote some contributions on the position of the Dutch language in the Netherlands and in Flanders.
