Logie Bruce Lockhart is the son of J. H. Bruce Lockhart and the nephew of Sir Robert H. Bruce Lockhart, the British diplomat, spy, and author. He was educated at Sedbergh School, in Sedbergh, England, where his father was headmaster. After graduating, he attended the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst. During World War II, he served in the Household Cavalry of the British Army. After the war he attended St John's College, Cambridge, as a choral student, where he played rugby. After graduating, he played rugby for Scotland from 1948-1953.

After retiring from rugby, he became an assistant schoolmaster and rugby union coach at Tonbridge School. 1955 he became headmaster of Gresham's School in Holt, where he stayed until he retired in 1982. During this time, he wrote many articles on a variety of subjects, concentrating mostly on education, fishing, sport and wildlife. In 1981, his first book, The Pleasures of Fishing, was published.
