Born and grew up in Nacogdoches, Texas during the great depression. In his book, ONE MORE MISSION, he describes his boyhood adventures and observed the effects of the depression. During his freshman year in college, the Pearl Harbor attack confronted his college education and challenged him to volunteer for the Army Air Corps as a bomber pilot of a B-24 to fly 35 combat missions. His book ends with the haunting question, "Why was I spared when over 50% of my bomb group were killed in action?"
