Michael Kirkby became a museum curator at York Castle Museum , in 1954 and then moved to Scunthorpe Museum and Art Gallery, in 1959. Here he developed the art gallery , and negotiated the use of Normanby Hall, having persuaded Lord and Lady Sheffield to let it.Michael later became curator of the Bowes Museum , Barnard Castle, and wrote 'The Vikings'.
