The Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society was founded in November **1877** by a group of colonial administrators in Singapore to research and document information relating to the Malay Peninsula and Archipelago.
   Short after its formation, on 6 May **1878**, the “Straits Asiatic Society” changed the name to the “Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society” (SBRAS). Its bi-annual appearing journal was the *“Journal of the Straits branch of the Royal Asiatic society“* (JSBRAS). The first issue appeared in July 1878.

In **1923**, the society's name was changed to the “[Malayan Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society][1]”. In **1964**, due to political changes in Malaysia, the society again changed its name to “Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society” (MBRAS). The society's headquarter moved from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur. Its journal is the *“Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society”*. Today it is the oldest active publication in Singapore and Malaysia.
