London born Denis Segaller was educated as a physicist at the University of London, graduating with first honours. However he soon drifted into film photography. During the Second World War he was a photographer for the British government as a civilian, but with an honorary RAF officer's rank. He then made documentary films for the United Nations, which eventually brought him to Thailand. Little did he expect it would become his home.

Divorced by the time he came to Bangkok, Segaller married a much younger Thai woman and became a stepfather to her son. He wrote his weekly 'Thai Ways' column for the 'Bangkok World' for ten years, before retiring to his home north of Bangkok. His 'Thai Ways' books were based on his newspaper columns. He was also a frequent contributor to 'Sawadee', the Thai Airways inflight magazine.

Segaller loved Thailand and even adopted its religion. He spent several months as a Buddhist monk. He was always polite, always soft spoken and always a delight to be around.
