Georg Trakl, geboren am 3. Februar 1887 in Salzburg, war der Sohn eines Eisenwarenhändlers. Bereits während der Schulzeit in Salzburg, etwa ab 1904, entstanden seine ersten Verse. Das dichterische Schaffen wurde für den drogensüchtigen und depressiven Pharmazeuten Mittel zum Überleben. Am 4. November 1914 starb er in der Psychiatrischen Abteilung des Krakauer Garnisonsspitals. Der mit vielen literarischen Zeitgenossen befreundete Dichter gilt heute als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter des Expressionismus der deutschen Literatur.
