Bertram Max Bacharach was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended the Virginia Military Institute. His education was interrupted by World War I, during which he served in the Marine Corps, but he returned and graduated after the war. After graduating, he became a buyer and manager for Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. In 1929 he founded the trade magazine Buyer's Outlook. In 1933 he started writing a column that appeared in Men's Wear Daily and the Daily News Record. In 1934, he became the editor of Men's Apparel Reporter magazine. In the early 1940s, he had a radio show on ABC called Letters to Your Serviceman, which he later adapted into a television show. He was the fashion editor at Pic Magazine in 1947 and Collier's Magazine in 1948. In 1953 he published his first book, Bert Bacharach's Book for Men, which he followed in 1955 with Right Dress: Success Through Better Grooming. During the 1950s, he was considered to be the top authority on men's clothing in the United States.
