He was born in San Jose de Lata, a small town located near to El Guamo, in Bolivar's department to the north coast from Colombia. He studied Sociology In National University from Bogota, Colombia, was emerital professor on several world's universities, like London School, Sorbona University, Patricio Lubumba University, Federico Villareal university, Colombia's Externado University, Cartagena's University, Atlantico's university etc. Was a colombian politic and cathedratic writer on various literaries generus.
About his life the colombian writer Juan Zapata Olivella wrote "Abel Avila is an imprescindible man. We never know with what amazing thing he'll be on a book, he doesn't care put a little of caviar to a piece of yucca's loaf or listen Mozart or Alejo Duran. To him the culture it's universal; but, he defends to die the caribbean, our people, our land, the things than he does, those are the things than it does to him so popular in our world".
