David Helwig was born in Toronto, Ontario, where he spent his early childhood years. When he was ten years old, his family moved to Niagara-on-the-Lake, where his father ran an antiques business. He received a Bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto in 1960, and a Master's degree of the University of Liverpool in 1962. After graduating, he returned to Canada to teach at Queen's University in Kingston. His first book, a collection of poems called Figures in a Landscape, was published in 1968. In 1992, he moved to Montreal, and in 1996 he moved to Belfast, Prince Edward Island. In 2009, he was named as a member of the Order of Canada. He haw published more than thirty books, mostly fiction and poetry. He currently lives in an old house in the village of Eldon in Prince Edward Island.
