Ciwa: pronounced Theewa.
Was born in the Figi islands, reared in Australia and Texas. After graduating from San Fransisco State University she then received her master's degree from Massachucetts University. Ciwa then worked in Monterey, California as a supervisor of teaching to the physically disabled. Three years later, she worked at the Calif. State Dept. of Education. Griffiths later became coordinator of special education for San Diego County schools. She founded the Hear Center in Pasadena in 1954 to diagnose and treat deaf children and adults. During the 1960's Ciwa discovered that placing hearing aids on deaf infants younger than 8 months could help recover hearing.
