Born and raised in New Orleans of Creole heritage, "The Refugees" is fiction based on fact tracing the factual Daubert family from privateers in Saint-Domingue to refugees in New Orleans. The story continues into the Newman-Daubert family and deals with Captain Francis Newman (killed at Vicksburg, 1863), and through his son, Hollis Louis Newman and wife Eleanor Rely. Norita Newman Massicot (wife of Andrew A. Massicot) also wrote, "The Beast, the Sheep and the Chariots," another fiction based on fact centering on the Newman family. (Gerald Massicot Gandolfo, New Orleans, 2009.) Note: Photo is from the book jacket and is from L-R, Norita Newman Massicot, Ynola Massicot Gandolfo and Gerald Massicot Gandolfo (ca. 1955).
