Hattie Drummond grew up in Texas and had a daughter, Lorena, who eventually worked as Buckminster Fuller's secretary at Southern Illinois University. Lorena was married to Charles Jean, a successful businessman and prominent Republican from Anna, Illinois. In her later years, Hattie lived with Lorena and Charles in Anna. Prominent Republicans, including Senator Everett Dirksen, often dined at their table. Hoot Owls and Orchids was an autobiography, which was published a year before her death at age of 91 in 1957.
