John McKay attended Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia from 1911-1915. He was an athlete, and played on the varsity football teams and track team. He also wrote poetry, mostly about sports and athleticism, which were published in the student paper. In his Senior year he was President of the Student Council.
After graduating, McKay studied at Harvard Divinity School for a year, but his studies were interrupted by World War I. He served with the YMCA on the Western Front. In 1918, during the Battle of Amiens, he was wounded while setting up an advanced dressing station. After recovering, he returned to Canada, where he worked for the McGill University YMCA in Montréal and studied at Presbyterian College. In 1923 he died from the injuries he sustained during the war. His book of poems, Après la Guerre, was edited and published after his death.
