Have you ever wondered what actually took place after the 1989 Alaskan oil spill... during the beach cleanup? Silence in the Sound is a story that will answer questions and show where one woman’s adventure took her, against all odds.
I had the unusual experience of working on the oil spill cleanup as a female General Foreman, when the Exxon Valdez ran aground in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The decision to record my experiences in a journal was not only a comforting one, but proved to be an interesting and sometimes an unbelievable documentation of the things that occurred during the months of my employment. My working relationship with supervisors, beach crews and the entire cleanup operation gave me insight to some of the underlying problem that were brought on by the inconsistency of orders and demands from mendacious officials. The hardships placed on some women to perform sexual duties demanded by their commanding supervisors were disgraceful.
This story combines unusual personal experiences with a wide gamut of emotions while working in a hazardous environment faced with demanding political and sexual situations. The result is a fascinating real-life adventure story that raises compelling questions which cannot be ignored.
