Dr. DÃaz-Bautista received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California Irvine (UCI). He also earned his master's degree in economics at UCI. He was also educated at UCSD and ITAM in Mexico City where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Economics. His career has involved academics, government service and consulting for private firms. He has been Professor of Economics and Researcher at COLEF for the past 9 years. He held the position of head of the Master’s Program in Applied Economics and coordinated the working paper series in economics. Professor DÃaz-Bautista has taught courses and seminars at the graduate level in the fields of industrial organization, macroeconomics, international economics, political economy, econometrics, mathematical economics, public finance, economic growth, economy and territory and regional economics. He has also taught courses at the undergraduate level in international economics, economic geography and economic development at the Universidad Iberoamericana del Noroeste. He has worked for 15 years as an energy economist and economic consultant for private firms. Previously, he worked with the Energy Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Energy.
He has written various books and articles in refereed scholarly journals both at the national and international level. His book, “The Determinants of Economic Growth: Convergence, Trade and Institutionsâ€, was recognized by the European Union Publishers Forum as part of the European Union Catalogue of Key Publications. His latest books are “Problemas Estructurales de la EconomÃa Mexicanaâ€, “International Experiences in Power Deregulation†where he examines the structural reform in the energy sector and is coauthor of “Modern Regional Economicsâ€. He was also recognized by the national system of researchers as a Distinguished National Researcher level II. He has appeared on radio and television programs, and has been interviewed for articles in The Los Angeles Times, Financial Times of London, San Diego Union Tribune, El Diario de México, La Opinión de Los Angeles, Imagen News, Radio Formula, El Sol de Mexico, El Sol de Tijuana, La Jornada, El Financiero, El Universal de Mexico, Periódico Frontera, Periódico el Mexicano, and many other news media. He has lectured and given more than 100 presentations and participated in international seminars and conferences in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia and Asia. Professor DÃaz-Bautista's research interests are based in the fields of international economics, industrial organization, port economics, energy economics and economic growth, with special interest in U.S. and Mexican border regions.
