After completing this thesis in 1982, I have worked on informal settlements upgrading in the area of Helwan (south of Cairo), in Egypt, in the late 80s. Following that I worked on natural resources and antiquities conservation in Egypt in the 90s. Lately (from 2005 - 2010) I have worked with low income communities in the southern Red Sea (Egypt), central Sinai, and in the historical area of Al Darb Al Ahmar (in medieval Cairo). I remain very interested in the various aspects of space use in different cultures and communities.
