Henri Bachelin est né à Lormes (Nièvre) d'un père morvandiau et d'une mère auxerroise. C'est à Lormes qu'il passe toute son enfance.

Après un passage au grand séminaire de Nevers puis dans l'armée il gagne Paris et travaille dix ans dans une banque avant de se consacrer entièrement à la littérature en 1911.

Ecrivain fécond, il publie une quarantaine de livres, essentiellement des romans. Ce sont des œuvres régionalistes où il dépeint le Morvan avec beaucoup de tendresse. Il publie également des romans à base historique ou des romans psychologiques. Il reçoit le prix Fémina en 1918 pour son roman Le Serviteur.

Il est décédé à Paris en 1941.
