Entomologist specializing on Orthoptera, he is widely known amongst insect taxonomists for his contributions to the development of a nomenclatural system for describing wing venation. He was the son of the entomologist Ludwig Redtenbacher (1814-1876) and nephew of the chemist Josef Redtenbacher (1810-1870).
