Gwilym Owen was born in Denbigh in north Wales in 1880. He studied at the University of Liverpool in England, and then at Christ's College, Cambridge, where he performed research under Sir J. J. Thomson in the Cavendish laboratory. He became a lecturer in physics at the University of Liverpool. He was appointed a professor at University College, Auckland, New Zealand. He became the professor of physics at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, in 1919, and was appointed vice-principal of the institution in 1932. He became acting principal in 1935, but had to retire due to ill health in 1936. He died in 1940.
Gwilym Owen wrote a number of popular books about the physical sciences in Welsh, including "Athroniaeth Pethau Cyffredin" (1907), "Cwrr Y Llen" (1914), "Rhyfeddodau'r Cread (1932), and "Mawr A Bach Sef Sêr Ac Electronau" (1936).
