Leo Monroe Sellers was born to Levi and Shirley (Corman) Sellers in Rushville, IL and graduated from Rushville High School in 1928. He had one brother, Dwight. Leo took his teaching exam on Friday the 13th 1928 and on March 1, 1929 was granted his teacher's certificate. In 1930 he married Martha E Cooper in Springfield IL and had a daughter, Mary and son, Albert.
Between 1932-1972 Leo was a teacher and or principal at Illinois schools in the following towns:
Foxridge, Astoria, Vermont, Chatham, Ferris, Mansfield, LaMoille, Amboy, and Streator. In 1955 he worked for the school bonding service.
Leo did his post graduate work at the University of Missouri and Carthage College. In 1943 he received his Bachelor's Degree from Western Illinois State Teacher's College and in 1945 he received his Master's Degree from the University of Illinois. In 1949 he enrolled in the Doctorate Program at Bradley University and in 1960 he was awarded the NDEA Scholarship from the University of Illinois.
On July 15, 1943 Leo was duly elected to membership in the Wappa Chapter of The Society of Sigma Zeta.
When he retired in 1972 he went to area schools educating children with his exhibits focusing on Native American artifacts.
In 1963 Leo lost Martha to brain cancer and in 1967 he remarried.
Leo died of cancer and was buried next to Martha in The Greenfield Cemetery in LaMoille, IL on November 17, 1981. His daughter, Mary, who passed in 2001, is also buried in the family plot. Mary had two daughters who survive. Albert passed in 2010 while living in Las Vegas, leaving behind two daughters, a son, a wife and grandchildren.
