Dark and Shallow Lies

Dark and Shallow Lies

Blurb

When seventeen-year-old Grey makes her annual visit to La Cachette, Louisiana – the tiny bayou town that proclaims to be the “Psychic Capital of the World” – she knows it will be different from past years: her childhood best friend Elora went missing several months earlier and no one is telling the truth about the night she disappears.

Grey can’t believe that Elora vanished into thin air any more than she can believe that nobody in a town full of psychics knows what happened. But as she digs into the night that Elora went missing, she begins to realize that everybody in town is hiding something—her grandmother Honey; her childhood crush Hart; and even her late mother, whose secrets continue to call to Grey from beyond the grave.

When a mysterious stranger emerges from the bayou – a stormy-eyed boy with links to Elora and the town’s bloody history – Grey realizes that La Cachette’s past is far more present and dangerous than she’d ever understood. She doesn’t know who she can trust. In a town where secrets lurk just below the surface, and where a murderer is on the loose, nobody can be presumed innocent—and La Cachette’s dark and shallow lies may just rip the town apart.

Our Review

"The last time I saw my best friend, she called me pathetic and then she punched me in the mouth."

I finished Dark and Shallow Lies about five days ago and I actually miss the characters. I want to read it again but my TBR means I can't justify it even though I really really want to!

Grey's annual homecoming to La Cachette, Louisiana is sad and strange without her missing best friend Elora. The two have been inseparable since birth, twin flames.

La Cachette is well-known for being the 'Psychic Capital of the World' but if anybody knows what happened to Elora they are keeping it close.

Elora and Grey were part of a group of friends the locals called The Summer Children, ten friends all born within the summer months. Grey soon learns that everybody has secrets and she begins to doubt she can trust anyone at all. Can Grey discover the towns secrets before it is too late?

Grey's dead mother had the ability to see people's auras and that is how Grey came by her name.

"Imagine looking at your perfect baby girl and seeing her swimming in a sea of grey. The colour of fog and indecision. The colour of nothing special. The colour of everything that's in between."

Grey hasn't come into her powers yet, this and the fact she lives away from town most of the year, leaves her feeling like a bit of an outsider. Despite living with her father this is still her home.

"It's like I never really leave the Bayou. Not entirely. My feet stay wet. The smell of the swamp lingers in my nose."

I struggle for words to describe how much this story absorbed me. I felt the rain pouring down on the swamp. Dark and Shallow Lies is one of the best young adult books I have read for a long time. I felt like it was glued to my hands, I didn't want to put it down and I am not sure I could have even if I wanted to.

This story gave me chills, if you haven't read Dark and Shallow Lies then you need to.

"I think of the Bayou stretching back towards Killer's Island like a dark and shallow sea. Conceals all our lies.

Our sins.

And our twisted roots.

How it drowns us all.

One way or the other."
