Dr. Iftikhar-ul-Awwal was born in Dhaka on 30th December, 1947 and had his schooling at Faujdarhat Cadet College, Chittagong. Dr. Awwal graduated with honours in History from Government College, Lahore securing First Class First position in the Punjab University in 1971. Obtained M.A. degree from the University of Dhaka in History, again securing First Class First position. He obtained Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London in 1978. He was a post doctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, School of Oriental and African Studies, and at the Institute of Oriental Culture, Tokyo University.
Dr. Iftikhar-ul-Awwal joined the University of Dhaka as a Lecturer in History in 1973. He is now a Selection Grade Professor at the same University. Dr. Awwal was the Chairman of the History department in 1999-2002. From 2002-2004, he was the Director General of Bangladesh National Museum. Dr. Awwal served as a Foreign Professor at the GC University, Lahore in 2007-2008.
Besides The Industrial Development of Bengal, 1900-1939, Dr. Awwal has edited two important books- Photographic Album of Old Dhaka (Dhaka, 2003) and Historical City of Dhaka, Evolution and Prospects (Dhaka, 2003) in Bengali. He has written chapters in the History of Bangladesh, Vol. II (published by the Asiatic Society), in Dwijendra Tripathi (ed.) State and Business in India (New Delhi, 1987). He has also to his credit many research article published both at home and abroad.
