John Melville Bishop is primarily known as a documentary filmmaker in the areas of anthropology and folklore. His best known films are **The Land Where the Blues Began** made with Alan Lomax, **Himalayan Herders** following up on his book **An Ever-Changing Place**, and **Oh What a Blow That Phantom Gave Me** based on the book by Edmund Carpenter. He lived in Boston 1974-1990, Los Angeles 1990-2007, and currently resides in Portland, OR. He taught video production and ethnographic film at UCLA from 1995-2008. As of 2010 he is writing a book about ethnographic film.
