Our Review

The Amber Spyglass is the final installment of His Dark Materials trilogy. If you haven’t read book one and two of the series then you need to read these first.

I can remember when I first read this book I was really disappointed and didn’t like it very much at all. After reading it for a second time I enjoyed it much more.

In this book we see a battle to end all battles, we learn the truth about Lyra and Will’s destiny and we see both characters grow up.

If you haven’t read this book, or have read it when it was first published and couldn’t take to it, then I suggest giving it a go.

I even liked and understood the ending much more this time around.

There were some things about it that I didn’t like still. For example, the change in Mrs Coulter’s character into someone weak, submissive and just a little bit dull. I just kept expecting her to get some of her bite back but that never happened.

Also, the majority of the chapters focusing on Dr Malone were tedious for me to read. I read them because I knew elements were important for the final story but I resented reading them.

The saving grace of this book were the characters of Will and Lyra who remained in-depth and interesting throughout.
