Our Review
Mad Girl: A happy life with a mixed up mind by Bryony Gordon is a must-read for anyone with a mental health condition or who is interested in mental health.
Mad Girl is a humorous book from the start.
“At times, maybe a little too honest. I have that problem sometimes. For instance, the other day, I was telling my best friend and her boyfriend all about the time my husband and I were having sex and my fitbit started vibrating to tell me I had reached my daily exercise goal, which sent my other half into hysterics and put a halt to proceedings.”
Bryony is brutally honest in this book and makes it clear that it is not self-help book, that she is no expert and that she has no miracle cure for mental illness.
She tells the reader that she has only recently been able to be honest with herself about the extent of her troubles. She decided to write this book after having her 5th breakdown in 25 years.
Mad Girl deals with a number of sensitive issues ranging from OCD to abusive relationships and does in a way that lets the reader know its perfectly normal to experience these things.
“I decided I was going to tell the truth and to hell if people thought I was weird, or a drama queen, or an attention seeker. If as a journalist who writes personal columns and candid books, I felt I couldn’t admit to these things then what hope was there for everyone else?”
She also talks about the disparity between mental health care and physical health care and the lack of funding from the government.
An interesting book.
