Our Review
One of my biggest rules is that I always read the book before I watch the film or TV series but, in this case, I was unaware it was based on a book. It is rare that I prefer a tv adaption over the book but again You was better as a TV series, but I might not feel that way if I had read the book first.
Guinevere Beck, or ‘Beck’ as she likes to me known, is an aspiring writer with a self-destructive streak and poor taste in men.
When she meets Joe Goldberg, she is impressed by his intelligence and his in-depth knowledge of the books in the bookstore where he works. He seems like the perfect catch.
Beck tweets incessantly about every aspect of her life and Joe uses her excessive use of social media to engineer meetings with her and ‘save her from herself.’
You is creepy and clever and made me think about my use of social media.
You was a difficult book to read because in a lot of ways Joe is likeable, he is designed to be someone the reader routes for even though at the same time we know he a dangerous stalker. His victims are extremely unlikeable, and I was almost routing for him to kill them.
One thing I really disliked about the book was the excessive use of the C word and some of the sexual scenes felt a bit gratuitous.
On the whole the book was highly readable despite its flaws.
