Wicked

Wicked

Blurb

An astonishingly rich re-creation of the land of Oz, this book retells the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, who wasn't so wicked after all. Taking readers past the yellow brick road and into a phantasmagoric world rich with imagination and allegory, Gregory Maguire just might change the reputation of one of the most sinister characters in literature.

Our Review

I was never a fan of The Wizard of Oz. I disliked Dorothy and found her incredibly dull, and I found Glenda too sickly sweet. The other characters were just not that interesting for me. The only character I was vaguely interested in was The Wicked Witch of the West.

I read Wicked many years ago and I cannot remember now if I had already read books by Gregory Maguire or if this was my first, regardless he is a firm favourite of mine. I love books that retell well known stories and Wicked is one of the best. It takes the bare bones of The Wizard of Oz and turns it on its head. I loved every single part of this book and I it is ony my list of books to reread.

Elphaba is an excellent character and reason enough on her own to pick up the book.
