Gregorio Sancianco y Goson was one of the first writers of the Propaganda Movement. He was a Chinese mestizo who went to Madrid for his undergraduate studies. He wrote one of the first books (El Progreso de Filipinas, Madrid, 1881) advocating economic reform in the Philippines. According to historian Father John Schumacher, Sancianco anticipated"most of the principal themes of the later Filipino nationalist campaign: administrative reform, eradication of corruption in the government, recognition of Filipino rights as loyal Spania
