James Wilson Bright received a Ph.D. degree in English from Johns Hopkins in 1882. He taught at Cornell University, then returned to Johns Hopkins in 1885 to become the head of the English department. He specialized in early Germanic languages, especially Old and Middle English. In 1905, he became the first occupant of the Caroline Donovan Chair of English, which he held until his retirement in 1925.
