A farmer's wife, teacher (in a one-room schoolhouse), genealogist, amature painter, church historian and eventually a Great-Great Grandmother, Anna Lee was born on a farm in Harford County Maryland that has been in the Kirkwood family since 1763. Married in June of 1941 she and Husband Gardiner Smith bought an ajoining farm where they lived together until his death in 1997. In 1973 she published 'Kirkwoods and Their Kin', a substantial history of her father's family dating back to 1731. The family includes Governor Samuel Kirkwood of Iowa and astronomer Daniel Kirkwood. As of early 2009 she lives quietly with her son Ron, her 67th year on the farm and 92nd within sight of the land she grew up on.
