Eric Ronald Hamilton was born in Clapham, and attended Clapham High School. At 19, he received a BSc degree from University College. He went on to receive an MA degree from Trinity College Cambridge.
During World War I, he was an Instructor Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, serving four years at sea and at naval college. In 1920 he became Senior Maths Master at Silcoates School, Yorkshire and then in 1922 he became Assistant Lecturer in Education at the University of North Wales in Bangor.
He was Principal of Borough Road College from 1932 until his retirement in 1961. During World War II, he became a Squadron Leader and oversaw the training of instructors in the Royal Air Force. After the War, he went to Germany to assist in the rehabilitation of training colleges, and later to Nigeria to advise on teacher training.
In 1954 he was awarded the CBE for his work in education.
