Charlotte Mendez is the former married name of Charlotte Zoe Walker, who has published short stories and articles under both names. CONDOR AND HUMMINGBIRD takes place in Colombia during the 1960's, and explores issues such as children in poverty, social inequity, and the mythology of pre-Columbian people of the Andes, especially the Kogi. It was published in 1986 by Alice Walker's Wild Trees Press, and in a British edition in 1987 by The Women's Press. After the publication of CONDOR AND HUMMINGBIRD, Charlotte Zoe Walker was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship in 1987. One of her short stories was included in the O. Henry Awards anthoogy in 1991, and another was an honorable mention in Best Short Stories 1993. As Charlotte Zoe Walker, she edited two volumes on naturalist John Burroughs, published by Syracuse University Press in 200o and 2001. She is married to Dutch artist in wrought iron Roland C. Greefkes. She has three children from her previous marriage to Jose Ignacio Mendez-- David Ignacio (who died in 2004), Rebecca Helen, and Rachel Susana Gabriela Mendez.
