Born to Orthodox Jewish parents in Hamm, Germany; birth name: Artur Schlossberg; lived (1919-29) in Mannheim, Germany; earned PhD in musicology under Heinrich Besseler from Heidelberg University in 1932; left Germany in 1933 and relocated to Paris; changed his name to Jean Berger in 1934; left Europe in May 1939 and relocated to Rio de Janeiro; entered the U.S. 11 November 1940; became U.S. citizen 1943; taught musicology and music history & literature at Middlebury College (1948-59), U. of Illinois, Urbana (1959-61), and U. of Colorado, Boulder (1961-68); spent remainder of his life as an independent composer (300 works), publisher (John Sheppard Music Press), clinician, lecturer, guest faculty member, choral conductor, and song recital accompanist. Based in Denver, Colorado (1974-2002).
