Born to Orthodox Jewish parents in Hamm, Germany; birth name: Artur Schlossberg; lived (1919-29) in Mannheim, Germany; earned PhD in musicology under Heinrich Besseler from Heidelberg University in 1932; left Germany in 1933 and relocated to Paris; changed his name to Jean Berger in 1934; left Europe in May 1939 and relocated to Rio de Janeiro; entered the U.S. 11 November 1940; became U.S. citizen 1943; taught musicology and music history & literature at Middlebury College (1948-59), U. of Illinois, Urbana (1959-61), and U. of Colorado, Boulder (1961-68); spent remainder of his life as an independent composer (300 works), publisher (John Sheppard Music Press), clinician, lecturer, guest faculty member, choral conductor, and song recital accompanist.
