I remember my grandfather as a very serious but loving person. He was 6ft 7in tall and very slim. He taught me how to grow runner beans, the way to position them in the soil and we planted an oak tree in their garden in West Sussex. I also remember him roaring with laughter at Tom and Jerry and he loved the Soup Dragon in the Clangers!! Not really what you would expect from a Harley Street Physician. We knew him affectionately as Gomming or Gomba which I recently realised arose from his birth and early upbring in China. He was the son of a medical missionary in china. He spent his 21st birthday as a civilian prisioner of war in Germany during the first world war. He loved flying and crash landed a plane in the late 1920's. Niqi Butterworth a photo will follow!
