Ward Hopkins Oliver was born in Mobile, AL, the son of Percy Walker and Mary Ward Oliver. He was raised in nearby Stapleton, Baldwin County, where he graduated Baldwin County High School in 1948. He spent 1948-59 in the Navy. While stationed at NAS Corpus Christi, he attended Del Mar Junior College part time 1956-59. He graduated Southern Missionary College, Collegedale, TN with a BS in chemistry, 1961, and received a PhD in Organic Chemistry under Dr. Paul Tarrant in 1964 at the University of Florida. He was employed at Penisula Chem Research (Gainesville, FL) 1964-66; Ciba Geigy (McIntosh, AL) 1966-74; Southeastern Chemical (Reserve, LA) 1974-75), Consolidated Chemical (Palacious, TX) 1976-78), and again at Ciba Geigy, (St. Gabriel, LA) 1978 until his retirement in 1995. He has nine patents and two publications in the field of organic chemistry, as well as several publications in genealogical journals.
