A New England native, Boston born and bred, David graduated from Exeter Academy, Yale College with a degree in English, and the Yale School of Medicine. After training in general surgery at the University of Michigan and serving as a medical officer aboard an aircraft carrier and at a naval hospital, he completed orthopedic surgical training in Harvard Medical School's residency program. For twenty-six years thereafter, he treated musculoskeletal disorders of all types in the Boston area, caring for patients and teaching residents at the Mass General, Faulkner, and Deaconess hospitals. Every winter, accompanied by his wife and three daughters, he volunteered to care for injured skiers at the Stratton Mountain Clinic in Vermont.

Retiring from medical practice in 1999, David began writing fiction, filling the rest of his time studying French literature, taking courses at Wellesley College, carving wooden bird and animal sculptures, and photographing nature. Initially a family vacation spot and finally a year-round residence, the unique coastal village of Annisquam, Massachusetts, spawned a first murder mystery, The Sum of Her Parts. The next product was No End of Guilty Creatures, a murder mystery occurring in another extraordinary setting near Concord, New Hampshire. Currently David pesters French publishing houses with La Fin de Maigret, his novel about the mysterious death of the detective who starred in 103 tales by Georges Simenon, while he works on translating it into English.
