The writing career of Ivo Michiels stretches back half a century. He made his debut shortly after the Second World War with several traditional novels, and also wrote film scenarios. In 1963, however, he made a totally new start with Het boek alfa (The book ‘alpha’). Inspired by the French nouveau roman, this work in effect introduced the modernistic novel into Flemish literature. In 1979 he retired to a village in France to devote himself to an ambitious new endeavour, the ten-volume series Journal brut. The first book, De vrouwen van de aartsengel (The wives of the archangel), appeared in 1983. The recently published De mirakelen, Elisabeth, de mirakelen (The miracles, Elisabeth, the miracles) is the final work in the series. -- [Source][1]

Ivo Michiels is romancier en essayist, daarnaast was hij actief als journalist, richtte diverse literaire tijdschriften op en doceerde aan kunst- en toneelacademies. Ook werkte hij mee aan programma's voor radio en televisie en schreef scenario's voor speelfilms en documentaires.

Het proza van Michiels heeft twee paradoxale kenmerken: de dwingende samenhang tussen zijn verschillende boeken en het streven bij elke boek opnieuw te beginnen. Alles wat hij schreef voor zijn roman Het afscheid (1957) werd later door Michiels verworpen vanwege het te hoge persoonlijke gehalte. Toch spelen autobiografische gegevens een rol in zijn werk: in Het boek Alfa (1963), een moderne klassieker, behandelt de schrijver zijn jeugd en adolescentie. Orchis militaris (1968) gaat over zijn ervaring als verpleger in Sleeswijk-Holstein, 'Dixi(t)' (1979) over familierelaties.

Michiels voltooide twee grote romancyclussen: het vijfdelige Het boek Alfa (een integrale herdruk verscheen in 2007 met een inleiding door Peter Verhelst) en het tiendelige Journal brut. De laatste reeks is voltooid met de roman De Mirakelen, Elizabeth, De Mirakelen (2001). In 1977 kreeg Michiels de Staatsprijs voor Verhalend Proza voor Een tuin tussen hond en wolf, in 1990 de Emiele Bernheim-prijs voor zijn hele oeuvre en in 1993 de driejaarlijkse Prijs van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap.
