"Fay" as we call him and was called during his lifetime, was born 28 Jan, 1816, (not 1817). He was the first son of Joseph Barrett and Sophia Fay, of Concord, MA. Jonathan Fay Barrett was named after his grandfather Jonathan Fay.

From a family of farmers in Concord, Fay became a lawyer, the only one of his siblings to veer away from the soil. Fay maintained an office in Boston and Concord and worked closely with David Loring, his father in law after he married David's daughter Lydia.

David Loring was one of the wealthiest men in Concord and as such, when Lydia and Fay were married on 27 April 1848, a pre nuptial agreement was drawn up to benefit Lydia, detailing all the possessions she brought to the marriage.

Lydia was 11 years younger than Fay, yet they had only one child Lucy Fay Barrett, born 25 Feb, 1849 and died 23 Jan, 1932. The line continues to this day, all on the female side...9/9/09. Fay died 23 Jan, 1885, 5 days short of his 69th birthday. The mysterious pain he suffered for a year was heart disease, and he died of a heart attack.

Fay was kind, indulgent, generous and affectionate. He was a tender and devoted husband to Lydia who was an invalid later in her life (what we believe was polio). Daniel French took a cast of Fay's face after he died, and he is buried at Sleepy hollow in Concord, MA . His grave is located on a western slope where the setting sun shines brightly..."Father always loved the sunsets" Lucy once said.

Lydia died in 1897 and is buried next to Fay.
