Raymond is an author-historian and he recently was cited for his help in a book by Dr.Christina Bashford, i.e., The Pursuit of High Culture: John Ella and Chamber Music in Victorian London, (2007 ed.). Publisher: The Boydell Press, Woodbridge, Suffolk, England, U.K. (ISBN 978-1-84383-298-0).
Raymond is from Yorkshire in England. He has 3 sons (now adults) to his first wife and he is also a grandfather. This was written by John for Queen Victoria's first official visit to the London Guildhall, John having later played in the orchestra at the Queen's Coronation.

Also in the British Library there are copies of J.Ella's books and in the Manuscripts Department there are some of his items. In the Bodleian Library, Oxford, there is a personal collection of his, e.g., on the musical union, pictures of other musicians, etc. This collection was previously at the Music Faculty Library in Oxford and when it was there, it was cited has such in one of Raymond E.O.Ella's books (2002 edition).
John was referred to in French as 'M.Ella', the "M" being for "Monsieur", a courtesy title; equivalent in English to " Sir or Mr ".
