Evelyn Gurley Crockett was born in Tyro, Mississippi in 1944, daughter of William Leonard Gurley and Myrle Norfleet. Raised in Dawson Springs, KY, she was orphaned in 1955 and moved back to Tyro to live with family. Evelyn married Larry L. Crockett of Independence, Mississippi and they made Oxford, Mississippi their home. In Oxford, Evelyn was a Mother and Homemaker and became a well-known artist and writer. She also organized the initial "Art and All That Jazz" festival held annually on the Oxford Square, a precursor to the current Double-Decker Festival. Later in life, Evelyn became the North Mississippi Regent of the David Reese Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Evelyn and Larry both died in 2003, leaving behind two sons, Michael Crockett of Norfolk, Virginia and Phillip Crockett of Nashville, Tennessee and five grandchildren (Lauren, Hannah, Madeline, Andrew, and Molly).
